Advancing technologies in energy capture and storage from various feeds continue to develop and percolate through the world market, whereas a key focus in industrial development is the reduction of waste streams. This is pursued for financial, regulatory, and financial reasons, and represents a significant challenge and opportunity. The decomposition and combustion of carbon-containing materials are critical feeds, with the resonance-stabilized C=O bond providing a significant thermodynamic challenge to reduce. We present a perspective on CO2 'cracking' using a variety of means already in use across the globe; coupling advances in analytical chemistry with established reactor characterization techniques.
