The focal point of Pacific Lutheran University's ACS Student Chapter, the PLU Chemistry Club, is to prioritize connecting with thinkers of all ages. PLU's Chemistry Club is aiming to ignite an interest in STEM fields and a passion for being lifelong learners by connecting students with each other through hands-on activities and community-oriented learning. The need for a network of leaders passionate about chemistry and STEM careers has been exacerbated by the recent disconnects many have felt throughout the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic. This academic year, PLU students will have an opportunity through the Chemistry Club to connect with Pacific Lutheran University's local youth community and show K-12 students the value of higher education and STEM disciplines. It has been shown that helping students envision themselves in a profession or field of discipline can encourage them to stay in school and invest in their own education. These events include our annual Halloween-themed “Mole Day Spooktacular” as well as our exciting annual spring recruiting event “Desserts and Demos”. These events provide opportunities for Chem Club members and science majors to share their passion for chemistry by participating in fun, educational demos. Additionally, the club has connected with the local middle school and high school where we will be helping with after-school tutoring and connecting with students during their after-school programs through hands-on chemistry learning. PLU Chem Club has the opportunity to use its resources and passionate members to meet the needs of young people in the Parkland, WA area who may benefit from finding community and support around their strengths, aspirations, and continuing education. PLU Chem Club members will find increased satisfaction in their work through the club as well as a strengthened sense of community amongst each other if they are contributing towards a common goal and seeing tangible results within the Parkland community.
