Hydrogen Isotope Exchange (HIE), the replacement of hydrogen atoms in C-H bonds with deuterium or tritium, is an important transformation that may facilitate further functionalization of molecules. Catalysts capable of performing this reaction on sp2 carbons are much more common than those acting on sp3 carbons. Work in this lab, however, has shown bismuth catalysts to be capable of facilitating this reaction on sp3 carbons in nitriles. Progress toward the development of a consistent method of analysis by 1H NMR relative to an internal standard as well as preliminary investigations into the active catalyst and mechanism of action will be discussed.
