Highway runoff presents an environmental risk due to heavy metals deposited along the road from cars and regularly washed into the surrounding area. Some heavy metals being present in car manufacturing may provide a potential link between highway runoff and pollution in the surrounding areas where the waste drains off the highways. To determine the metal contents of waters and soils, samples were collected both upstream and downstream from three separate bridges crossing the Susquehanna River. The samples metal contents were first analyzed on the XRF. Soil samples were then digested to be analyzed along with the water samples on the AA. A potential link between runoff will be presented since increased metal concentrations downstream from highway bridges was found.
