In recent years, there have been significant advances in the field of negative thermal expansion (NTE) materials in solid-state inorganic chemistry. Unlike conventional materials, a solid that exhibits NTE properties shows a decreasing volume as temperature increases. Solids that exhibit NTE are able to help provide a solution to the unfavorable consequences of positive thermal expansion, specifically in construction, dentistry, high-tech manufacturing, and aerospace applications. While NTE has been observed in some end-members of the A2V2O7 family of materials, we aim to understand how the properties change and can be tuned as a function of chemical composition and under a certain degree of chemical pressure toward a more complete understanding of how crystal chemistry influences these properties. We report the synthesis, characterization, and temperature-depending structural properties of Co2-xNixV2O7.
