Prussian Blue Analogues (PBAs) represent a well-studied metal organic framework-like class of materials with applications in energy storage, catalysis, and medicine. Recently, the Strouse group at FSU have employed FeCo-PBAs as single source precursors for the systematic, size-controlled conversion of PBAs to nanocarbides. This conversion follows a templated mechanism, in which the framework and mesocrystal size dictate the eventual nanoparticle size and composition. We have since shown the ability to systematically control the ratio of Fe/Co in the PBA and resultant nanocarbides. However, an investigation of the synthesis of other bimetallic MX-ide (phosphides, nitrides, sulfides) materials through this templated pathway has not yet been explored. Likewise, these nanomaterials have not been evaluated or optimized as potential electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this study, we will demonstrate the ability to control mixed metal stoichiometry within the PBA and MX-ides and thorough characterization protocols for the development of nanomaterials as electrocatalysts for OER. We will explore how the crystal phase, elemental composition, and morphology effect the performance of these materials in the OER. These materials will be characterized using physical, chemical, and electrochemical characterization methods; pXRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, EDX, XRF, FT-IR, LSV, CV, and Chronopotentiometry. Electrocatalytic studies on overpotential, electrochemically active surface area (ECSA), and stability testing will be done through collaboration with the Lazenby group at FSU using a rotating disc electrode (RDE) electrochemical cell.
