Many current chemistry students are enrolling in analytical chemistry courses without a traditional introductory chemistry laboratory experience.  Although theoretical concepts can be learned using virtual methods, physical manipulation of laboratory equipment and chemicals is more problematic. Therefore, experiments reinforcing concepts traditionally learned in introductory chemistry laboratories are appropriate.  The stated purpose of this experiment is to correctly identify each member of a set of unknown copper II salts by measuring their solubilities and comparing them to theoretical solubilities calculated from Ksp values. Concepts reinforced include preparation of saturated solutions, serial dilution, pipetting using both glass and Eppendorf pipettes, complex formation, spectrophotometric methods, and equilibrium concepts and calculations.  This experiment may be performed either by an individual student or by a small group of students to reinforce communication skills.
