German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) and Roman Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) products such as tea, essential oils and topical lotions are widely used in a variety of markets around the world. Their popularity stems from chamomile flowers having anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant and sedative benefits. While there are many studies that analyze differences in chamomile compositions, there are few that analyze the specific chemical components that give chamomile its unique characteristics. In addition, there is limited knowledge on whether industries utilize German or Roman chamomile in their products. Using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Infrared Spectroscopy, and distillation methods, this study will focus on identifying which type of chamomile (German or Roman) is being used in commercial products and the chemical components of the two.
