With the revolution in energy landscape across the globe and the growing demand for electric mobility has soared the demand for metals like Li, Co, Ni, Mn. The significance of these materials has gained credence with the world countries owing to cut their greenhouse gases by utilizing the greener technologies in the manufacturing, transportation and consumption. The main source of these metals have been the mining, extraction of these metals from ores and complex mixtures.Task-specific ionic liquid (TSIL) has been used for the extraction of these metals using chelation interactions. TSIL is composed of an anionic and cationic complex. Its main features include liquid state &lt;100 <sup>o</sup>C, ability to form chelation with the opposite dipoles, ligand substitutions and change in anions effects TSIL properties making it tunable. Liquid state of TSIL makes it amenable for extraction of metals, green solvent, electrolyte in batteries. With these features, TSIL has been extensively used as a greener approach towards countering the excessive use of water, harsh acids especially during extraction of critical elements. Phosphonium ionic liquids (PILs) (Fig 1) are type of ionic liquids which are thermally more stable, and the kinetics of the salt formation is faster. PILs have also no acidic proton, which makes them stable towards nucleophilic and basic condition, and they have lower density than water. Synthesis of tetra-alkyl phosphonium halide involves S<sub>N</sub>2 displacement with rigid alkyl halides under heating. Dodecyl-tri-alkylated phosphonium ligand is synthesized with efficient yields and characterized. Synthesis, characterization, TSIL properties will be presented.
