Utilization of renewable energy sources requires large-scale energy storage systems. Not only because its supply is timely and regionally limited, but also the fluctuation of power-input can damage electrical grids. Recently, redox-targeting flow battery has been developed as a high-capacity energy storage system, which takes advantage of redox flow batteries (scalability) and solid-state batteries (energy density). Redox-targeting flow batteries are made of a heterogeneous redox-target as the main energy storage material and homogeneous redox-mediators that shuttle electrical energy between redox-target and electrochemical cell. In theory, there are two possible systems. First, single mediator system with a single redox-mediator that exactly matches the redox potential of the insoluble polymer. Second, dual mediator system with two redox-mediators that have finely tuned redox potentials according to charging and discharging processes. The insoluble polymer was prepared using a ferrocene-based, self-crosslinking monomer. Also, soluble mediators with different redox potentials were synthesized by modification of ferrocene. In this study, cycling of the insoluble polymer with different mediator systems was performed to show the differences between the two forementioned systems in polymer utilization, and voltaic efficiency.
