Marine structures recognized for their vibrant colors and for being the habitat of various marine species, coral reefs, have suffered a bleaching phenomenon due to high temperature levels. This situation has been aggravated by the contamination of excess chemical ingredients within sunblock such as octinoxate. This emerging pollutant causes the reef a stress situation in which it expels the zooxanthellae algae that lives inside it in a symbiotic way to provide carbohydrates through photosynthesis, which allows the coral to build its calcium carbonate skeleton and have vibrant colors. While zooxanthellae receive nutrients and a protected habitat from the coral. The reason for this research is to synthesize and characterize Ca (II) -Fe (III) alginate beads for the removal of the emerging pollutant octinoxate in distilled water since alginate has proven to be effective in absorbing various chemical compounds. Adsorption tests will be done for the contaminant octinoxate in distilled water at various pH and at various temperatures. These will be analyzed by UV spectroscopy. The octinoxate solutions will be placed in contact with the Ca (II) -Fe (III) alginate beads at various pH and will be prepared in triplicate and placed in sealed glass bottles at various temperatures with magnetic stirring up to a period of 24 hours. Aliquots will be taken at timed intervals until equilibrium is obtained. All samples will be analyzed quantitatively in triplicate by UV-VIS spectroscopy.
