Heidelberg University’s ACS Student Chapter is extremely involved in the Heidelberg and local community. For the 2020-2021 school year, the ACS Chemistry Club won the Student Organization of the Year Award from Heidelberg’s Student Senate. The Chem Club was able to overcome the difficulties of COVID-19 and adapted in order to continue events around campus. Remote monthly meetings were held via Zoom the entirety of the first semester. During this period attendance steadily increased. In the second semester, the Chem Club was able to offer students the opportunity to attend meetings in person through social distancing and still continued the Zoom option. During our meetings we frequently took advantage of Zoom to bring back alumni to speak about their careers since they left Heidelberg or to participate in social activities like an online scavenger hunt. Between our monthly meetings, we held events around campus such as tie dye, slime, and bouncy ball making. Our student chapter also tries to be heavily involved with community outreach events. We created and sent instructional videos for elementary students that coincided with experiment boxes we were given by ACS in order to adapt to the COVID-19 guidelines.
