The use of polyhydric alcohols in a direct fuel cell utilizing an alkaline anion-exchange membrane (AAEM) is described. Fuel cell performance of ethanol, propanol, ethylene glycol, and glycerol are compared to methanol in alkaline and acidic conditions. Energy densities up to five times greater are observed for polyhydric alcohols compared to direct methanol fuel cells. Enhanced fuel cell performance is observed due to reduced fuel crossover and reduced cathode flooding that are prevalent and have plagued commercialization of direct-methanol fuel cells.
