The incorporation of 8-aminoquinoline (8AQ) directing groups on organic substrates has proven to be an attractive strategy for the functionalization of arenes and aryl-halides in transition metal catalysis, particularly in reactions which suffer from poor regioselectivity or difficult oxidative additions. This presentation will highlight recent research focused on gaining mechanistic insight into Cu-catalysis with 8AQ-directed benzamides through the synthesis and characterization of several catalytically relevant 8AQ-ligated Cu complexes. Investigations of these complexes in fundamental organometallic reactions such as oxidative addition and C-H activation will be described, as well as the implications for proposed high-valent Cu(III) intermediates in related catalytic cycles.
