Nonlinear laser wave-mixing spectroscopy is demonstrated as a sensitive detector for heart failure biomarkers pro-atrial natriuretic peptide (proANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP). Wave mixing is an ultrasensitive optical absorption-based method, and hence, analytes can be detected in their native forms label-free using a UV laser, or labeled with fluorophores or chromophores using a visible laser. The wave-mixing signal beam is strong, collimated, and coherent (laser-like) and it can be collected by a simple photodetector with an excellent signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). Chemical selectivity and sensitivity levels could be enhanced when wave-mixing is coupled with capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and field amplified sample stacking (FASS) procedure. Wave mixing detection of biomarkers can be also achieved with sub-nano-molar or zepto-mole level sensitivity levels using our compact portable detection system.
