The presence of recalcitrant pollutants in water (non-biodegradable compounds) is one of the most difficult challenges in wastewater treatment and water purification. These compounds are hardly degraded during biological treatment and can be discharged into receiving water bodies without alteration. The combination of advanced oxidation with microbiological treatment is an alternative for the elimination of such organic compounds. Advanced oxidation involves several techniques based in the production of hydroxyl radicals. Oxidation may lead to more biodegradable substances that can be removed during biotreatment. Depending on toxicity and/or organic carbon concentration in the effluent, the pollutants can be partially oxidized before or after the biotreatment. A novel approach includes recovering the pollutant from the effluent by adsorption prior to the application of an advanced oxidation treatment. In this talk, several bench or pilot scale examples will be presented on the combination of adsorption, advanced oxidation and biotreatment, for the elimination of recalcitrant compounds.
