One of the goals of university fundamental research is to provide a basic understanding of scientific principals and techniques.  A tremendous benefit of such basic research in many fields is the application of these learnings in industrial settings where the knowledge can be utilized to advance scientific product developments.  This is certainly common in healthcare and the pharmaceutical field and isn’t exclusive to a basic understand of biology leading to new drugs.  It has also been critical to analytical research that advances the drug development process.  Fundamental advancements in drug-protein binding and other affinity methods in chromatographic techniques over the last couple of decades have resulted in an explosion of the use of affinity techniques as tools in pharmaceutical research.  This talk highlights key developments in the history of affinity techniques and how they have translated into adoption in the pharmaceutical industry.  Today, affinity methods are utilized in the pharmaceutical industry routinely to solve challenging problems.  Selected modern applications are also presented to highlight specific achievement in the field of pharmaceuticals where affinity methods have been utilized.
