In this presentation, I will describe the production of carboxylated cellulose nanomaterials using concentrated maleic acid (MA) hydrolysis, CNM-MA. MA is a US FDA approved indirect food additive that has minimal concerns for environment. MA is also a solid acid that facilitate recovery. Furthermore, MA is a also an acid hydrotrope that can solubilize rapidly lignin to facilitate the production of lignin containing cellulose nanomaterials directly from raw lignocellulsoes. This presentation will provide a few examples of various cellulose nanomaterial produced and their characteristics. We will try to define a new class of nanomaterials similar to cellulose nanocrystals in terms of mrophology but produced through chem-mechnical means. The presentation will also outline scale-up production as well as road map to achieve chemical recovery. Finally, the presentation will provident two examples for MA-CNM applications: (1) Use as a rheology modify for water-based oil drill mud. The work was a collaboration with Prof. Peresin of Auburn University. (2) MA-CNM for composite application, the work was carried out by Georgia Institute of Technology.
