Many industrial processes, in particular hydrogenation and dehydrogenation processes, rely on multi-metallic catalysts based on supported metallic nanoparticles, where metals, promoters and supports all play essential roles. Classical synthetic approaches such as incipient wetness impregnation generates complex materials, due to dissolution-precipitation processes that take place during the synthesis, making molecular understanding of the role of each component very challenging. Here, we will show how Surface organometallic chemistry (SOMC) can be used to tailor the interface and the composition of bimetallic systems, making them more aimable to spectroscopic studies and detailed structure-activity relationships.[1] This lecture will focus on two case studies related to alkane dehydrogenation[2] and CO<sub>2</sub> hydrogenation[3] to show how SOMC can provide unique information about the active site structure of catalysts and enable to implement rational approaches to develop heterogeneous catalysts.
