Strong molecular confinement is one of the major forces shaping transport phenomena in systems ranging from soils and minerals to biological membrane pores. Detailed understanding of these phenomena requires creation of model system that can reproduce and control confinement on the scale commensurate with naturally occurring nanopores. I will describe several experimental approaches for recreating and studying water and ion transport under confinement. I will show how different degrees of confinement in inner pores of carbon nanotube porins can drastically alter the efficiency of water and proton transport and create unusual ion transport mechanisms. Finally, I will discuss extending these mechanisms and physical principles to nanochannels created from layered 2D materials.
