Rapid development and urbanization have placed strains on human and planetary health. As a society, we are at a critical juncture to reduce CO<sub>2</sub> in our atmosphere and mitigate the effects of climate change, which will require a multimodal approach. Chemicals and materials are fundamental to many facets of modern society, but they come with a large embodied carbon and waste footprint. In this talk, I will be introducing efforts at Microsoft Research which aim to design new materials with minimal environmental impact. In particular, I will introduce our vision for sustainable production of common materials such as plastics and concrete and introduce the work around reimagining printed circuit boards with sustainability and end-of-life in mind.
