New business owners face hurdles during the start-up phase specially those launching a business related to chemical technology. It is of particular importance for a business to develop a strong intellectual property portfolio that includes patents and trademarks. A strong IP portfolio may provide the key to obtaining valuable resources such as a source of funding, or it can be an attractive detail to a potential investor. However, the road to obtaining a strong IP portfolio has challenges, in particular those that may arise while, for example, at the US Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) during the prosecution process.<br/>This presentation will attempt to make a small business owner more comfortable with the intellectual property process in the US by providing guidance and understanding to the US patenting and trademark process. Topics will include highlights of both the patent and trademark process as well as potential pitfalls that may affect a small business.
