Many graduate students with invisible illness express difficulty receiving accommodations and support for their health struggles. The accommodations needed as a graduate student researcher are vastly different from those needed as an undergraduate student, and many universities do not have systems in place for graduate students despite advancements in disability services for undergraduates. As a student who has lived through chronic pain, an autoimmune disorder, surgery, and mental illness during graduate school, I will share my experience finding accommodations in a graduate chemistry program, advice for other graduate students, and possible ways that PIs and departments can help accommodate and advocate for their students.
