Academic hospitals and universities have always been a fertile ground for biomedical research where many FDA approved drugs originated. As the pharmaceutical companies have reduced their activities in the early-stage drug discovery, the protection of IP generated at academic hospitals and universities became more critical than ever before to secure the healthy supply of novel drugs candidates. This presentation highlights some of the unique challenges academia faces when strategizing an optimal IP protection and its ever-evolving engagement with the industry partners to support these efforts.
