Purpose of the Study: The maintenance of the relevant knowledge and skills pertaining to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) depends on regular simulation-based training. Integrated peer-supported education into the training processes of residents provides many benefits, fostering an academic culture that values ‘learning by teaching’ and ‘developing of future educational leaders’.1 The mutual benefits of peer-educators and participants should be highlighted for healthcare professionals.
Materials and Method: A peer-supported 1-day simulation program was organised for residents from various disciplines. The training materials were sent to the participants one week in advance. Different teaching methods were used during the training, including simulation scenarios, demonstrations, role playing, as well as, debriefings. Fourteen residents were divided into three groups, which were formed considering the participants fields and levels of expertise. A live broadcast was held during training, which facilitated the self-reflection of the participants. Ten of the residents were from clinical disciplines, while the other 4 were from basic sciences. The program was designed as ‘Basic Life Support’ (BLS) followed by ‘Advanced Life Support’ (ALS) to allow the participants to be free to leave after completing BLS if they didn’t have direct patient care. A quasi-experimental design was used to evaluate the effect of peer-supported training on the change in the residents’ test scores, and their self-efficacy perception while performing CPR. The data analysed after IRB Approval (GO 21/149).
Results: Pre- and post-test scores revealed a significant increase in terms of cognitive process (z=-2.807;p=0.005), as well as, the self-efficacy perception levels (z=-3.317;p= 0.001).
Conclusion: In our study, the peer educators and participants’ feedback supported the impact of peer-supported training on creation of a community of educators and creation of a culture that values teaching. Although studies mostly include medical students in peer-supported training process2,3, the results of our study were consistent with literature.
