Purpose of the study. Bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), despite its key role in increasing chance of survival after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, is rarely attempted. Better understanding of public interest in CPR could facilitate planning and targeting initiatives for improving the bystanders’ response. We aimed to characterise public interest in CPR in the authors’ home countries (Germany, Italy, Russia) based on internet search traffic analysis.

Materials and methods. Web search data were retrieved from Google Trends (GT) on a relative search volume (RSV) scale (0-100). RSV is the ratio of amount of search for a particular query to all possible searches on all topics of a given geography and time range. We downloaded RSVs for GT’s “Cardiopulmonary resuscitation” search topic (i.e. a group of terms that share the same concept in any language) for each studied country from 2017 to 2021. The RSVs were plotted and analysed descriptively.

Results. Comparison of RSVs demonstrated substantial between-country differences in temporal trends and levels of popularity for CPR topic (mean RSVs: Germany 18.19, Italy 10.66, Russia 9.74; p≤0.01; Figure). For Germany and Italy, the RSVs peaked on 12th June 2021 (increasing by, respectively, +450% and +231% compared to the five-year mean) when Danish footballer Christian Eriksen suffered cardiac arrest and was resuscitated during live Euro-2020 match. By contrast, for Russia, the RSV decreased that day (–30%), and the peak popularity of CPR topic was observed on 6th April 2021 with indeterminate relation to a particular event.

Conclusions. Public interest in CPR has individual country-specific landscapes, is dynamic and may react to cardiac arrest and resuscitation events in celebrities with manifold rises of the online search traffic. Real-time national-level surveillance of the search activity could reveal spikes of the public interest and determine optimal time for delivering community awareness campaigns and resuscitation education interventions.
