Purpose: Out-of-hospital cardiovascular arrest is rare in children, but when it occurs, it is often associated with poor survival rates and high morbidity. The prevalence of cardiovascular arrest can be reduced by monitoring. Home monitoring of infants can be very stressful for parents; they frequently report increased anxiety and discomfort. Self-explanatory training materials are a good approach for parents of high-risk infants to reduce fear and provide a feeling of security (1). The aim of this project is to develop an evidence- based educational video on paediatric basic life support for parents of infants equipped with a home cardiac and breathing monitor.
Methods: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane and TRIP database in December 2021. Guidelines on infant resuscitation available in English or German were included. The quality of the guidelines was assessed using the MiChe (Mini-Checklist) instrument.
Results: The European Resuscitation Council (ERC) Guideline (2) proved to be the most valid source for educational video content. Based on these recommendations, a script for accurate infant resuscitation was written. In January 2022, the video was filmed in a simulation center. The video is silent; the necessary instructions are given in text passages within the film. This allows the video to be translated into other languages with ease.
Conclusion: This video aims to provide parents more security, comfort, and confidence in handling their newborns and home monitoring them during their first year.
