Cardiac arrest in adulthood is very common and represents a serious public health problem in Western countries. The average age of cardiac arrest patients is around 66 years in countries such as the USA (1). The worldwide average incidence of OHCA in adults is 95.9/100,000/year. European incidences are similar (2).
Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is the most time-critical medical emergency (3). Successful resuscitation depends critically on adequate CPR by bystanders, if resuscitation maneuvers are not performed or are performed erroneously the chances of survival decrease considerably and survivors do so with major neurological sequelae.
Teaching CPR maneuvers to the adult population is of great importance to reduce mortality.
Material and methods
Five persons over 60 years of age were selected from the Community of Madrid, 4 women and 1 man. The participants were trained with our DR-CPR device to perform cardiac massage on a manikin equipped with a potentiometer to measure the actual depth and compression rate. We compared the results of massage with and without wristband feedback while measuring all data with to assess the accuracy of our mathematical model.
Results
The results were significant 4.69+- 6.7mm vs 55.73+-5.01mm (p<0.061) for depth and 60.76-+13.89 bpm vs 106.63+- 5.87 bpm (p<0.68) for rate.
RSME 3.01mm for all depth measurements with a Pearson correlation of 0.94 p(0.0001).
Conclusions
Cardiac massage with feedback device improves the quality of cardiac massage.
