X-in-the-Loop development and validation approaches are commonly used in the automotive industry to shift validation activities to earlier phases. Multiple integration levels for test configurations like MiL, SiL & HiL raise the question: “which configurations is best suited to meet the validation need?” Thus, the trade-off between available resources and technical uncertainty must be solved. Our observations in advanced engineering projects have shown, that the assessment of modelling uncertainties is often experience-based. However, when seeking development decisions and convincing stakeholders based on results from mixed physical-virtual test configurations, objectification is necessary. Based on a validation environment where consistency of input-, model- and output data is ensured, a systematic comparison of mixed physical-virtual configurations with a prototype of the developed electric traction drive system is conducted. The resulting classifications regarding different validation needs such as the control behavior and system efficiency, serves as a reference for subsequent validation activities.
