Summary
For an optimized BEV performance with regards to range, safety, weight, package etc., synergies between battery and vehicle need to be utilized. Thus, many aspects need to be considered and investigated (crashworthiness, stiffness, thermal efficiency, etc.) and the diverging requirements of a battery and vehicle need to be merged.
To bring all requirements together, this paper shows a development approach to define the common structural architecture, interfaces, assess concepts and elaborate guides to support a concept decision processes. This approach is strongly supported by benchmarking, analytics, and reduced and advanced simulation methods.
To realize an overall lightweight concept, the focus is but on utilization of synergies in the rocker section (battery and vehicle), utilizing cell stiffness, structural bonding concepts, compensation of cell swelling behaviour, robustness against thermal propagation and venting gas exhaust. The process separates in three main phases: requirement & system definition, concept design, validation.
