Objectives: Burn patients develop physical and psychological sequelae that have a negative impact on daily functioning and decrease their health-related quality of life. Bromelain-based enzymatic debridement (NexoBrid®) is a treatment option that has recently changed burn management. Increasing evidence has been published regarding its advantages compared surgical debridement, which constitutes the standard of care (SoC). This study aims to determine the impact of enzymatic debridement on health-related quality of life in burn patients treated in our Burn Unit.
Methods: A retrospective study on 80 patients admitted to Cruces University Hospital Great Burn Unit between October 2016 and April 2020. Demographic data, information regarding burn characteristics and type of treatment received during hospital admission was collected. Health-related quality of life was measured using EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D) and Burn Specific Health Scale-Brief (BSH-B) scales, both in Spanish, at least one year after patient discharge from hospital.
Results: Patients in the NexoBrid® group significantly underwent less surgical interventions, including escharotomies, had a shorter admission time and lower treatment costs. Most patients (85-90%) in both treatment groups did not refer mobility or self-care problems. Only 30% experienced problems performing usual activities or suffered a moderate degree of pain, and around 20% presented a moderate degree of anxiety or depression. No statistically significant differences were found regarding the quality of life in burn patients after enzymatig debridement compared to SoC.
Conclusions: Measurement of health-related quality of life has become a relevant strategy to study the health status of a population and to analyze the effectiveness and the efficacy of healthcare interventions. Burn patients have a decreased health-related quality of life when compared to general population. This difference increases in patients where a greater percentage of body surface is affected. Bromelain-based enzymatic debridement enables a statistically significant reduction of hospital admission times, number of surgical interventions and hospital costs. No statistically significant differences were found between bromelain-based enzymatic debridement and the SoC in the health-related quality of life scales analyzed in our study.

P.039 Comparison of health-related quality of life in burn patients after enzymatic debridement (Nexobrid®) vs surgical debridement: our experience at a tertiary center

Dear friends and colleagues,

We will be pleased to welcome you in Turin (Italy) for the 19th European Burns Association´s Congress in 2022. Italy is honored to hold the meeting of the European Burns Association for the second time, after Verona in 1995. Turin is easily reachable from everywhere in Europe, either travelling by car, train or choosing flight connections. During the meeting, held in the renewed industrial center of the main Italian historical automotive factory (i.e. Lingotto-FIAT), we will meet international burn specialists, focusing on standards of care, progresses in burn treatment, strategies to face disaster situations, with a special attention to education of younger colleagues. However, in your spare time, you might enjoy the sweet days of Italian late summer, simply wandering in the green parks and gardens along the two rivers which cross the city, or you might decide to discover the numerous art galleries, churches, palaces, libraries, walking across elegant squares and large boulevards, passing through centuries of art and history; finally, you may choose to immerse yourself in some of the most exciting museum experiences, such as the Cinema Museum and the Turin’s Egyptian museum.
