Background: Selective enzymatic debridement (NXB) has emerged as a valid alternative for the treatment of extensive burns, especially for partial, mixed or full thickness burns. The lack of the donor sites regardless remains the main reconstructive challenge. Autologous skin grafting represents the procedure of choice when available, and modified Meek technique of grafting maybe suitable in this regard to optimize the final outcome.
Methods: A single-cohort retrospective analysis was performed, involving 9 burn patients who underwent both enzymatic debridement with NXB and subsequently modified Meek technique from 2018 to 2022 at Verona Burn Unit. Demographic and clinical data, including mechanism of injury, surgical treatment, complications, necessity for re-grafting, further surgery and aesthetic outcome were collected by means of electronic medical record reviews.
Results: All patients were affected by large burns of mixed and deep dermal thickness. Average age was 47 years old, mean TBSA was 44%. Local infection sustained by poor general conditions was the main complication for all patients after surgery, that led to the loss of the micro-graft and the need for re-intervention. All but two patient survived. Selectiveness of enzymatic debridement seemed to improve the quality of scars and the final functional and aesthetic result of micro grafting, evaluated with the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) and with the Patient Scar Assessment Scale (PSAS).

We will be pleased to welcome you in Turin (Italy) for the 19th European Burns Association´s Congress in 2022. Italy is honored to hold the meeting of the European Burns Association for the second time, after Verona in 1995. Turin is easily reachable from everywhere in Europe, either travelling by car, train or choosing flight connections. During the meeting, held in the renewed industrial center of the main Italian historical automotive factory (i.e. Lingotto-FIAT), we will meet international burn specialists, focusing on standards of care, progresses in burn treatment, strategies to face disaster situations, with a special attention to education of younger colleagues. However, in your spare time, you might enjoy the sweet days of Italian late summer, simply wandering in the green parks and gardens along the two rivers which cross the city, or you might decide to discover the numerous art galleries, churches, palaces, libraries, walking across elegant squares and large boulevards, passing through centuries of art and history; finally, you may choose to immerse yourself in some of the most exciting museum experiences, such as the Cinema Museum and the Turin’s Egyptian museum.
