Smart responsive surfaces with exceptional wettability have attracted great interest due to their potential for broad applications in science and industry, which can be achieved by applying different external stimuli such as light, heat, electricity, solvents, pH, stress or magnetic field. Among these modes, the magnetic-responsive mode has received increasing attention due to its many advantages such as fast response, remote controllability, and biocompatibility.<br/>Superhydrophobic surfaces with special wettability have been used in many industrial fields such as anti-corrosion, anti-icing, and anti-bacterial. Combined with the unique superhydrophobicity, magnetic-responsive superhydrophobic surfaces have great potential applications in more fields. There are currently few studies on magnetic-responsive superhydrophobic surfaces.<br/>In order to realize the free manipulation of microdroplets, magnetic-responsive superhydrophobic surface was fabricated by one-step spraying combined with magnetic induction. The contact angle of magnetic-responsive superhydrophobic surface was up to 165.6°. The reversible microdroplet manipulation was demonstrated by only using a magnet in non-contact manner. Manipulation of different volumes and types of droplets was also achieved. The preparation method was simple and scalable without any expensive equipment and materials. This magnetic-responsive superhydrophobic surface not only provides a new avenue for lossless droplet manipulation, but also opens up new avenues for the realization of programmable and smart microfluidic systems.
