Since the origination of high-temperature sodium-sulfur or sodium-metal chloride batteries for stationary electrical storage worldwide (&gt;30 years ago), there have been many advancements in ambient temperature sodium electrochemistry in non-aqueous aprotic electrolytes as well as emerging solid-state devices. Many of the liquid electrolyte systems use hard carbon anodes for sodium-ion (i.e. a non-metallic sodium anode), but the solid-state electrolyte versions use metallic sodium. Underlying causes to the rise of sodium tend to be linked with the ebb and flow of Li-ion battery cost. Nevertheless, the energy density of sodium batteries can reach 300 Wh/kg in best cases, but long-term reversibility and rate capability can still be issues. In this work, technical benchmarks that are tied to commercialization of sodium batteries for grid storage or EV use are targeted in order to increase the TRL of the technology. For example, utilization of low cost Mn, and Fe alone in the cathode are foremost, the production cost and procurement of hard carbon is low and simplified, and the choice of solvent and salt (i.e. electrolyte) promotes long-term (&gt;30 years projected operation). Realizing these objectives positions sodium batteries for worldwide adoption and implementation. This presentation will use specific technical cases/experimental results that show potential to overcome limitations in the technology.
