In the past years, there has been significant progress on understanding Mg electrochemistry in the context of developing rechargeable Mg batteries. Majority of existing work has been focused on divalent charge transfer, interfacial reversibility and its stability under dynamic conditions (i.e., continuous potential cycling). Here we will discuss our recent discovery of “static instability” of Mg/electrolyte interfaces (i.e., the interfacial instability under long static rest condition), which is relevant to shelf life of real-world batteries. We will discuss our approaches to stabilize the interface and achieve improved reversibility through electrolyte and interface engineering.
