Electron transport in molecules occurs through a mechanism that is fundamentally different from the one in conductors or semiconductors. As was early recognized in the seminal work of R. Landauer and S. Datta, in molecules conductance is quantum scattering and the use of semi-classical models is strongly limited. I will discuss the main contributions to this field, including the analysis of local probes, e.g. STM and AFM, and the connections between the theory of transport and conductance and that of electron transfer in molecules. In this context, I will examine the important role played by A. Roitberg in the early days when the theory and computation of conductance in molecular junctions was developed.
