In 2005, together with Anthoni Dutoi, Peter Love, and Martin Head-Gordon, we suggested the use of quantum phase estimation for the estimation of molecular energies. I can't believe it has been 17 years of that already. Since then, important advances such as much more improved error-corrected algorithms have been introduced as well as a large family of variational algorithms based on the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and beyond. In this talk, I will provide an overview of the trajectory of the field and discuss potential directions of interest.
