As educators, we know we can (and should) help widen young people’s horizons and increase their aspirations. The college curriculum for a chemistry major is difficult for all students but sometimes students feel they are isolated and no one understands them. They may have difficulty finding someone they can confide in or share anxieties about their feelings. Many times it may be that they cannot confide in their parents. My philosophy in teaching has been and continues to be that teaching is more than what takes place in the classroom. Teachers often find themselves as not only mentors and role models to their students but they often have to serve as the students confident and friend. In this presentation, I will discuss the opportunities I have had over the years to serve in these roles for my LGBT students and how I have contributed to their success.
