Over the past couple of years, the pandemic has presented technological and psychological challenges to both students and educators. Chemistry classes were transitioned to virtual teaching and learning and then back to traditional classroom-based instruction. It is especially important to find ways to motivate and engage students in learning under the current circumstances. Strategies and actions taken by the instructor to increase student engagement in General Chemistry I and Organic Chemistry II are discussed in this presentation. Student surveys were constructed to get their feedback along the way so that changes can be implemented immediately to enhance student learning. Various strategies were employed to promote active learning both inside and outside the classroom. Connecting everyday life examples to the subject matter and relating chemistry education with current events helped to motivate students in learning. Students’ feedback on teaching and learning will also be presented.
