A typical drawback of the azobenzene chromophore is that the Z-state reverts to the E-state thermally. However, researchers have shown that when azobenzenes are incorporated into a macrocyclic structure (i.e. azobenzenophanes), they have been observed to exhibit a long-lived Z-state (~20 days or longer) which is desirable for material applications. Our group has synthesized pyridyl-based azobenzenes and demonstrated their photochromic properties using UV/vis and 1H NMR spectroscopies. The progress towards the synthesis and implementation of these chromophores into target pyridyl-based azobenzophenones will also be demonstrated.
