We are living in the second quantum revolution, a time where we can harness our newfound control over the quantum nature of the universe towards applications ranging from computing to sensing. Within each of these applications, the fundamental requirements for a quantum unit differ dramatically - a computer can be built of physically isolated qubits at nanokelvin temperature, while a biologically compatible quantum sensors requires water compability. Chemistry offers three crucial attributes for quantum information science - reproducibility, atomic precision, and tunability. The aggregate of these three attributes poises chemically designed systems to impact this area. We have developed a type of qubit, the molecular color center which features optical read-out of spin information, akin to the anionic NV center in diamond. Recent progress in tuning molecular systems to mimic defects will be described.
