A cubic, hybrid double perovskite phase of the form [Me4N]2[KM(NO3)6] (M = La-Nd, Sm-Lu, Y, Am, Cm), which crystallizes in the high-symmetry space group Fm-3m, was prepared in an effort to study fundamental periodic properties and coordination chemistry of the rare earth series and their chemically analogous minor actinides. The series was obtained via evaporative crystallization from a mixture of Ln/An(NO3)3, KNO3, and [Me4N][NO3] in a 1:1:2 ratio in either DI H2O or 4.0 M HNO3. A trivalent rare earth or actinide hexanitrato moiety forms an extended coordination network with K+ counterions via coordination by the distal oxygens on the nitrate ligands, resulting in a second, 6-coordinate octahedral site with the remaining charge balancing Me4N+ cations occupying the interstitial voids in the lattice. These compounds represent a rare example of single crystal structures of an Am-nitrato compound, and the first reported for Cm, and have potential for application in materials science. This periodic series was characterized via single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, IR and Raman spectroscopy, and ICP-MS analysis, and the results will be described here.
