Development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are hybrid porous crystalline materials with a potential to solve numerous environmental and energy challenges, can benefit from reliable ways to enable crystal growth of MOF crystals with controlled size—ranging from colloidal nanosized particles to large MOF crystals. By combination of “chemical” and “mechanical” approaches, we show that control over the size of resulting MOF structures can be achieved by suppression of nucleation and changes in growth rate afforded by different synthesis media. The comprehensive characterization combining optical imaging, electron microscopy, in situ FTIR, and Raman spectroscopies, as well as a novel effect of simulated microgravity on MOF growth, will be discussed.
