Compounds of secondary metabolism (those not essential for growth and development) are the result of evolution of the producing organism to better cope with its abiotic and biotic environment. We understand relatively little about the roles of these molecules in chemical ecology, but discovery of many pesticides, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceuticals are based on these natural compounds. Natural compounds derived from microbes, insects and plants with potential uses in management of microbial pathogens, pest insects, and weeds, was well as some with human health benefits will be discussed.
