Iron is benign if present in right amount in the body as well as environment. It will be harmful if there is an imbalance of iron concentration in the body. For example, low amounts of iron can cause anaemia and cirrhosis of the liver whereas high iron concentration is frequently associated with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Furthermore, iron is one of the major components used in many industries; exposure to aerobic conditions can cause its oxidation, leading to its leaching in the water resources. Therefore, it is desirable to develop a facile, rapid, label-free and selective method to detect Fe3+. In this study, we developed a nanopore sensing technique for Fe3+ using a chelating agent. If there is presence of Fe3+ in the sample, a significant variation in the events of the ligand was observed. Our method was sensitive (could detect ferric ions at nano-molar levels), and selective (a variety of other metal ions would not interfere with the detection). Our developed nanopore-based Fe3+ detection technique should be able to find potential use in various applications.
