Carbon capture and storage plays an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Membrane separation is considered a technology with great potential due to its low energy consumption and high selectivity, whereas polymer membranes often suffer from a trade-off between permeability and selectivity. Metal organic framework (MOF) can be used as ideal filler for polymer membrane because of its structure and function can be easily designed and regulated. By acid treatment of MOF-808 to expose the active site and graft bromoacetic acid, the ionic liquid (IL) can be synthesized in situ on the MOF framework. IL@MOF complex can selectively promote CO2 transport, and the introduction of IL can effectively regulate the pore structure of MOF, which is beneficial to improve the permeability of CO2 and CO2/N2 selectivity. When IL@MOF complex was further added to polymer matrix to prepare the mixed matrix membrane, compared with MOF-808 membrane, IL@MOF-808 membrane showed a significant improvement in CO2 permeability (increased by 45%) and CO2/N2 selectivity (increased by 70%), which exceeded the Robson upper bound.
