Energy storage technologies and the associated materials that enable them will soon be in significant demand, especially in connection with the growing electric vehicle and grid storage markets. It is now clear that secure, economical, and diverse supply chains are necessary for the success of these markets. Current cathode materials, based heavily in Ni, will clearly play an important role and fundamental work remains in that regard. However, alternatives to these chemistries will be critical in expanding the available portfolio of materials. Ideally, these materials would be sustainable in terms of abundance and supply chains and would easily integrate into the existing, mature, Li-ion infrastructure.<br/>This presentation will discuss research and development efforts at Argonne National Laboratory aimed at advancing cathode materials that are rich in manganese and have the potential to be cost competitive for electric vehicle applications and beyond.
