Glycans and glycoconjugates have extremely diverse complex structures and play essential roles in numerous biological and cellular processes. Studies of their biological functions require the access of pure and structurally well-defined carbohydrate molecules, which demands the availability of efficient glycosylation methods and strategies. Although remarkable success has been achieved, development of new benchtop stable glycosyl donors which may be activated by catalysts under mild conditions is of constant interest. Based on recent literature reports and our efforts, we have developed a new and mild cationic gold(I)-catalyzed glycosylation. In this presentation, we will describe the details in the discovery of this methodology.
