Research in the cleavage of carbon-fluorine bonds is of interest due to their inertness and high bond strength.  The conversion of a highly inert compound to a more reactive compound is useful, especially in the creation of building blocks for chemical synthesis.  Alternative carbon-halogen bonds are more reactive, and thus allows for numerous types of reactions that can be carried out on them.  Work done by the Williams group has succeeded in the conversion of trifluoromethyl arenes to their chlorinated or brominated counterparts.  The conversion to its iodinated counterpart, however, has not been studied.  Methods previously developed by the Williams group will be expanded upon to create the iodinated product from perfluorinated carbon centers.
