Lighting accounts for 22% of total US electrical energy use, which translates to a $50 billion/year industry. Replacing conventional light bulbs and displays with phosphor-converted LED-based technology is one of the most accessible opportunities to reduce electricity consumption worldwide. Current LED-based displays such as televisions, monitors, smartphones, and tablets utilize a blue LED and green- and red-emitting inorganic phosphors to create the colored images seen on displays. However, LEDs are not problem-free. Long-term exposure to high intensity blue LED emission over-activates photoreceptors in the eye to continually produce dopamine and cortisol and suppress the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone. This has been reported to lead to insomnia, as well as mood disorders, cataracts, and macular degeneration. As a result, companies like Apple Inc. have produced Night Shift, but this this not only encumbers the devices’ color rendering, but the prevailing intense blue LED emission still causes melatonin suppression. This talk will investigate the production of human-centric displays by transitioning to violet LEDs as an alternative method to reduce the amount of blue light generated by modern displays. This methodology, however, requires the discovery of identifying new blue-emitting phosphors that are compatible with violet-emitting LED chips. One promising material is K3AlP3O9N:Eu2+ which was synthesized by high-temperature solid-state techniques and characterized using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. Optical characterization reveals that this material meets the necessary requirements for display lighting, including an incredibly narrow emission, excellent violet light absorption, and a thermally robust emission. The structure-property relationships yielding these optical properties will be discussed and finally we will demonstrate the ability to produce a human-centric wide gamut display using K3AlP3O9N:Eu2+ and a violet LED.
